Overview

For over 50 years, the NCHC Annual Conference has set the standard for honors education. Attended by over 2,000 honors faculty, staff, and students every year, the conference is a unique venue for all members of the honors community to come together and present their research among one another, and represent their honors program.

Many educators speak of the innovation or “creativity crisis” currently afflicting U.S. education: a lack of these qualities in faculty pedagogy and student experiences. If creativity and innovation have lost their places in education, but are deemed necessary, can honors provide solutions?

As honors faculty, students, and staff, can we use creative ideas as a means to unlock our preconceived notions and complacency? To apply creativity to all aspects of education, thinking, and life? Our plenary speaker, Lynda Barry, is an acclaimed cartoonist, author, playwright, and professor of Interdisciplinary Creativity at the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Discovery. She suggests that everyone is innately creative, and will offer techniques to reconsider our current patterns and re-imagine them in new and slightly different ways.

Honors must continue to disrupt and eschew the routine of education and seek creative means to challenge ourselves, our peers, and our students. New Orleans, a city known for its creative and innovative approaches to everything from education and environment to music and food, will provide the backdrop for our explorations!

Print Program Add-On

In support of the NCHC’s commitment to sustainability, a print copy of the conference program will no longer be complimentary with registration. A printed copy of the #NCHC19 program can be purchased for $10 and must be selected on the next page for each individual attendee. Printed programs will only be available until the Early Bird Deadline to allow for printing time. We encourage you to share within your group or go paperless for 2019.

If you opt not to have a printed program, we have two FREE digital and convenient options for you!

  • A searchable PDF copy of our entire program will be available on our website prior to conference.
  • The NCHC conference app provides a full event schedule with the ability to build your own custom schedule, view our sponsors and speakers, receive notifications, updates, and much more.

The app will be available for download with a code for the NCHC event coming this summer. Watch for details as our schedule develops!

Additional Sessions in Registration

Beginning in Honors

Wednesday November 6, 2019 | 12:00 p.m.

Beginning in Honors is a workshop designed for new honors directors and deans or those leading or creating new honors programs and colleges.

This workshop starts off in a large group, and then is broken down to small groups, focused upon specific institutional types -- large universities; medium-sized institutions; small public, private, and faith-based colleges; and two-year schools.

Pre-Conference Workshop: International Education 101 - $50

Wednesday November 6, 2019 | 2:00 p.m.

Interest in international study and globalization opportunities for honors students has increased in recent years, yet the prospect is daunting for program directors, particularly those with little international experience. This short course offers concrete and practical guidance for creating and sustaining international short-term experiences.

Critical elements of pre-program and post-program planning are covered as well as strategies to make the international component of the experience truly honors worthy. Participants will workshop a possible program for individual institutions with particular attention to pre- and post-program development.

This pre-conference workshop is limited to 30 participants

Partners in the Parks Excursion

Thursday November 7, 2019 | 8:30 a.m.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is a U.S. National Historical Park in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, near the French Quarter. It was created in 1994 to celebrate the origins and evolution of jazz.

Most of the historical park property consists of 4 acres within Louis Armstrong Park leased by the National Park Service. The Park provides a setting for sharing the cultural history of the people and places which helped to shape the development and progression of jazz in New Orleans. National Park Service staff present information and resources associated with the origins and early development of jazz, through interpretive techniques designed to educate and entertain.

This Partners in the Parks excursion is limited to 25 participants.

City As Text Excursions

Thursday November 7, 2019 | 11:00 a.m.

Kick off #NCHC19 by taking to the lively streets of New Orleans!  An NCHC signature event for decades, City As Text (CAT) positions honors students, staff, and faculty as explorers in the city.  Participants will seek to more deeply understand the conference theme, ‘Disrupting Education,’ through conversations and observations in New Orleans’ neighborhoods, public spaces, and cultural landmarks.

Indicate your interest in being a CAT explorer by registering for the event on this form. In September, you will be contacted to indicate your preferences for specific sites.

Post-Conference Workshop: "Play, Performance and Improvisation: Tools to Maximize Creative and Developmental Pedagogy" with Lois Holzman - $150

Sunday November 10, 2019 | 8:00 a.m.

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to an approach to teaching and learning that taps into the human capacity to play, pretend, perform—in other words, to be “ourselves” and “not ourselves” at the same time. Based in a synthesis of performative psychology and social approaches to learning, improvisational and unscripted learning crosses academic disciplines, gives teachers new ways to deliver content, and engages students intellectually and emotionally in new ways. Experience the practicality, power and fun of building the ensemble, performing as expert, playing with theory, and much more.

Read more on Lois Holzman here.
