The NCHC Program Review Instrument states that honors students should receive honors-related academic advising from qualified faculty and/or staff. In this intensive workshop, we will discuss key theoretical foundations of advising and how to implement those frameworks in the context of advising honors students. This institute is ideal for academic advisors who are newer to honors and/or honors staff who are newer to advising.

The institute will be comprised of three primary blocks:

  • Advising theory: Frameworks / concepts
  • Student interaction: Practical approaches to working with high-achieving students and students with holistic needs
  • Advisor needs: Professional development

New this year will be a track for experienced honors advisors and honors advising administrators. Special breakouts for this audience will include:

  • Managing from the middle / capacity building
  • Communicating the value of honors advising to stakeholders
  • The role of advising in honors student persistence and success

Hear from past participants of the Honors Advising Institute:

"The NCHC Honors Advising Institute was an opportunity to connect with other advisors from across the country to understand, articulate, and improve the significance and delivery of honors advising. I know from my individual students' experiences that they value having an honors advisor. This institute helped me draw on diverse program experiences and student development scholarship to be able to articulate to campus officials why honors advising is important and valuable in general. It has helped me be more effective as an advocate and a future leader in honors education."
-Rachel Armstrong, University of Michigan

"The NCHC Honors Advising Institute was worthwhile. It was transformative to be in a room full of other honors advisors and administrators. Honors advising is very different from major advising, and was a rare treat to be able to talk with colleagues from around the country who understand what we do."
-Trisha Eardley, Arizona State University

"Academic Advising is a continually growing profession. It was an amazing experience to be in a room with some great advising minds from across the country to talk about and create best practices. I look forward to more opportunities to engage with honors advisors through NCHC. I would recommend this institute to any honors academic advisor who wants to be inspired to engage their students in impactful ways and to create the means for that engagement."
-Rachel Pawlowski, Wayne State University
