Important Registration Information:

If you are not the director of your program, or you do not hold a current NCHC Institutional, Professional, or Student Membership, and/or have not attended an NCHC program in the past year, you may not be in our software system yet! You must sign up as a "Contact" prior to registering for any NCHC program.

Click here to sign up as a Contact!

Be sure to select “Contact” when creating a username for our website. If your institution has an Institutional Membership, signing up as a "Contact" will affiliate you with your institution, and you'll receive the member discount. If you sign up for any membership aside from "Contact," you will be asked to pay for that membership fee.

You'll receive an email notification, and THEN you may start registration for the NCHC20 Virtual Events.

If you are registering from a Nonmember Institution, please proceed through registration as a "Guest."

After registering, you will receive an e-mail near the last week of September with your direct login into our virtual conference portal, as we get closer to the NCHC20 Virtual Events kicking off on September 30th. This login will be unique to your individual registration. If you are registering more than one attendee, each of the attendees you have registered will receive their own login into our conference portal.

Any questions? Please contact the NCHC Office at or (402) 472-9150.

In the absence of our much beloved NCHC Annual Conference, we are doing our very best to re-imagine fall trainings and sessions into a format and schedule that allows you flexibility for both participation and attendance. We've advanced our deadlines for presenters as semester time-frames have shifted, so that we can collect information and sessions ready for your viewing this October. We recognize that our honors colleagues are struggling under the weight of additional obligations, concerns, and decisions in this new semester - and as your professional home for honors information, we are striving to create a quality event series that balances valuable discussion and opportunities to participate with conscientious use of your limited time and budget funds.

The event structure we are finalizing combines a mixture of session formats. To provide opportunities for presenters to participate with the most flexibility, our scheduled sessions will be primarily pre-recorded presentations. During these sessions, selected to give a variety of perspectives on the "Big Hearts, Big Minds" theme, presenters will be attending in real time to interact through each session's Q&A feature. Aiming to include as much of the content variety as we can accommodate in this new event platform, presenters were also invited to record their session and upload it to an on-demand presentation library. All session recordings, both real-time and on-demand, will be available to registrants for a full year following the event.

NCHC20 is the first event of its kind for the organization. With a transition from an onsite event to the virtual world, we encouraged accepted presenters to consider recording their material and participating in a number of events over six weeks.

  • Student Intensives: 9 featured presentations over two days, networking, posters, library of recorded material

All material will be available for your review for a full year following the event.

VIew Draft Schedule

*All times listed below are in Central Time.

Our theme for the NCHC20 Virtual Events is “Big Hearts, Big Minds.”  Compassion and empathy are necessary and required qualities if we are to enact equity and inclusivity in our programs and institutions, not to mention the workplace or society at-large.  The academy is educating the future generation and training the imminent workforce.  How do we, as educators, facilitate the teaching of qualities that are ingrained in cultivating kindness?  What intentional practices signify that the expansion of our heart is as important as the growth of our mind?  Can we teach, or learn, compassion?  If we attend to emotional intelligence, empathy, and understanding, do we undermine “ rigor”?  How do emotional skills fit into an academic curriculum?  Can honors be a catalyst within institutions to encourage the thoughtful development of emotional skills as an enduring, habitual way of life?

How we have accomplished, attempted or plan to achieve these goals in our programs, classrooms, curricula and pedagogy will be a focus for NCHC in 2020. Coming together over six weeks in the fall of 2020 and concluding after a likely contentious and divisive election, we must ponder and plan now how we will open and develop our hearts through listening to other experiences, explore our own vulnerabilities, act with empathy, compassion, kindness and caring, and develop activities and events leading to reflection and self-examination

To quote Parker Palmer: “We teach who we are.” According to Palmer, what we teach, how we teach, and why we teach, are indeed important questions.  But the most important question of all is, “Who is the self that teaches?”  He asks: “Should educational institutions be expected to support a teacher’s inner life, and how can they do that?”

Even though the interplay of cognitive and affective processes in learning, decision-making, creativity, and productivity is well documented, academia has traditionally privileged cognition almost to the exclusion of other considerations.  Is it time for this paradigm to shift?

And therefore, perhaps an equally important question is, “Who is the self that learns?”  As students, how do we cultivate the qualities of compassion and empathy that lead to inclusion and wholehearted acceptance of our peers?  How do we grapple with dissent?  How can we be kind in a competitive environment?  How do we sustain the subjective “I” in an academic environment that praises and encourages so-called objectivity? Or…should we?  “Big Hearts, Big Minds” will offer ideas and tools for us to decide for ourselves.
