Partners in the Parks: Zion National Park

This trip will focus on the Natural, Historical, and Cultural resources the park has to offer. Topics as diverse as astronomy, wildlife biology, botany, climate, geology, history, hydrology, paleontology, Native American cultures, art, and conservation will be covered by a combination of the PITP faculty and park staff/rangers.

Affiliating yourself with your institution

If you are not the director of your program, or you do not hold a current NCHC Institutional, Professional, or Student Membership, and/or have not attended an NCHC program in the past year, you may not be in our new software system yet!

You must sign up as a "Contact" prior to registering for any NCHC program, using the link below. 

Sign up as a Contact!

Be sure to select “Contact” when creating a username for our website. If your institution has an Institutional Membership, signing up as a "Contact" will affiliate you with your institution, and you'll receive the member discount. If you sign up for any membership aside from "Contact," you will be asked to pay for that membership fee.

You'll receive an email notification, and THEN you may start registration for the intended institute.

(If your institution is not a member of NCHC, please proceed as a "Guest.")

Mandatory Documentation

This year, when you register, you will be required to turn in 3 forms stating your acknowledgement of different NCHC policies while you are a participant on your potential trip. To save you some time while registering, we recommend downloading these files now, digitally or physically signing them, and have them ready to be uploaded with your application.



Airport Information

McCarran International Airport - Las Vegas (LAS)

Suggested to fly in on Tuesday May 14th, and stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites Las Vegas Airport North Convention. The hotel offers a 24‐hour free shuttle to/from McCarran Airport (LAS), as well as the Las
Vegas Strip, and free breakfast.

The whole group will meet to depart for Zion on the morning of May 15th in the hotel lobby.

*This overnight stay is the responsibility of the participant.


Proposed Itinerary

DAY 1: 5/15/19

  • 8‐9am: Meet up at hotel & Introductions
  • 9‐12pm: Drive to Zion
  • 12‐2pm: Lunch in Springdale (pick up perishables)
  • 2‐4pm: Set up tents, establish cook groups
  • 4‐5pm: Free time (explore the campgrounds)
  • 5‐7pm: Dinner
  • 7‐9pm: Reflections
  • 9:15pm – 10:00pm – Ranger Evening Program: Science in the Sky (Astronomy)

DAY 2: 5/16/19

  • 7‐8am: Breakfast
  • 8‐11am: Walking the Watchman Trail (Ranger Led Walk/Hike)
  • 11‐1pm: Lunch @ campsite (walking distance from Watchman Trail)
  • 1‐3pm: Human History Museum & Ranger‐Led Patio Talk @ 2pm
  • 3‐5pm: Shuttle tour (Canyon Loop – 80 minutes) – with time to hop off and explore
  • 5‐7pm: Dinner
  • 7‐9pm: Reflections
  • 9:15pm – 10:00pm – Ranger Evening Program: Bonkers for Bats (Wildlife Biology)

DAY 3: 5/17/19

  • 8‐9am: Breakfast (and pack bagged lunches)
  • 9‐11: Drive to Bryce Canyon
  • 11‐1: Explore Bryce on Foot (Easy trail/picnic lunch)
  • 1‐4pm: Horseback riding tour (3 hours) $90 per person
  • 4‐6pm: Drive back to Zion
  • 6‐9pm: Dinner & Reflections (in tandem)
  • 9:15pm – 10:00pm – Ranger Evening Program: Bighorn Sheep (Wildlife Conservation)

DAY 4: 5/18/19

  • 8‐9am: Breakfast (pack bagged lunches)
  • 1‐5pm: Picnic & Hike (Angel’s Landing or Emerald Pools)
  • 5‐8pm: Dinner & Reflections (in tandem)
  • 8:00pm – 9:00pm: Ranger Evening Program: Conservation of the Condor (Wildlife Conservation)

DAY 5: 5/19/19

  • 6‐7am: Breakfast (pack lunch/snacks)
  • 7:30 – 5:30: Full Day Canyoneering Guided Trip: $189/person (
    o If too expensive, can switch to half‐day excursion, using extra time for final projects.
  • 6‐8pm: Dinner
  • 8:00pm – 9:00pm – Ranger Evening Program: Life, Land, & Identity (Native American Culture)
  • 9‐10pm: Reflections/Final Projects

DAY 6: 5/20/19

  • 8‐9am: Breakfast
  • 9‐11am: Pack Up
  • 11‐2pm: Drive to Vegas (lunch on the way)
  • 2pm: Airport drop off
  • *Participants wanting to stay an extra night in Las Vegas are welcome to do so, at their own expense.

All requests for refunds MUST be submitted in writing to the national office and RECEIVED no later than thirty days in advance of the trip departure date.

  • Received prior to 30 days before trip departure:          Full refund, less a $50 per person administrative fee
  • Received within 30 days before trip departure:            No refunds granted
