Students will explore the intersection of environmental, political, and cultural boundaries represented in Big Bend with many of the park's unique characteristics stretching between two countries. This National Park is unique in having various biological environments including the river, desert, and mountains. These ecotones provide the opportunity to have a variety of experiences within a short amount of time and in relatively close distance. Along with the natural environment, the current political discussions offer an opportunity to discuss social and political topics with participants.

Pursuing a December excursion is positive because of the abundant plant life present after the rainy season, August and September. And for students traveling from northern states, visiting south Texas may be more enjoyable during a cooler time of year. Additionally, there are few Partners in the Parks programs that fall during the December and this could allow an opportunity for students to participate during their winter break.
