Created in 2015 in conjunction with our organization's 50th Anniversary, the NCHC Founders Award is the most prestigious award bestowed by our organization. The Founders Award serves to honor members who have been instrumental in the development and advancement of NCHC and its programs. The Founders Award will be awarded on an annual basis to those who have helped build the foundation for NCHC and have made a significant impact on the organization.

Dr. John Portz, a long-serving volunteer and leader at NCHC, not only provided expertise but understood the value of financial investment in NCHC. The Portz Fund supports three specific awards within NCHC: • The Portz Interdisciplinary Research Fellowships support original and extended student interdisciplinary projects for up to eighteen months. • Portz Grants, distributed twice a year, support innovative teaching initiatives within an honors program or college. • The Portz Scholars program

Prior to his passing in 2014, John Hanigan managed NCHC's financial investments and also served on the NCHC Board of Directors. John was a highly respected advisor and supportive friend of NCHC, leaving a legacy of integrity and commitment to the service of others. In his honor, the John J. Hanigan Scholarship was created to highlight a student who is active in their honors program and committed to giving back in their community. The annual award assists with travel and expenses for conference.

The Schuman Fund » Donate Online

Dr. Samuel Schuman, who passed away on November 11, 2014 left a legacy as an accomplished scholar, professor, and administrator. He demonstrated his commitment to NCHC through board service, executive leadership as President, and mentorship of many NCHC peers. Originally created through a privately funded donation, the Sam Schuman Award for Excellence at a Four Year Institution serves to annually recognize those who are making outstanding teaching contributions to the honors community.

The Brandolini Fund » Donate Online

Ron Brandolini, founding director of Valencia College’s honors program in the 1980s, served in that capacity for 20 years. Ron was a frequent presenter at NCHC conferences and a session leader for Beginning in Honors for many years. The Ron Brandolini Award for Excellence at a Two Year Institution, presented by NCHC and the Valencia College Foundation, annually recognizes a two-year college honors director or faculty member for their outstanding contributions to the honors community.

Dr. Freddye Davy served as the honors director at Hampton University until her passing in 2012. The award provides funds to support travel and expenses for the NCHC Annual Conference. The Davy Scholarship represents an important step in ensuring that deserving, underserved students get the quality academic experience needed to address and encourage their participation in both their educational communities and in the communities they will be part of long after graduation.

The S.P.U.R. Fund (Sloane Prize for Undergraduate Research) » Donate Online

The S.P.U.R. Awards have been established as an annual prize to the top undergraduate presenters in the various categories of NCHC Student Posters at the Annual Conference. This endowed fund was established in recognition of the lifetime contributions of Dr. Mike Sloane in promoting high quality undergraduate research. The NCHC poster forum provides a framework for honors faculty and students to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate research.
