Be immersed in the natural and cultural history of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail/Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Students will trace the paths of Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery expedition and the Nez Perce tribe from Lewiston, Idaho to the Lolo Motorway in the Rocky/Bitterroot Mountains where the Lewis & Clark/Nez Perce National Historic Trail crosses from Montana into Idaho—the most difficult part of Lewis and Clark’s westward journey.

Tracing the path of Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery at the most difficult point in their journey west through the traditional Nez Perce tribal lands of north-central Idaho and the wild and untamed Bitterroot mountains, students will travel along five wild and scenic rivers; soak in natural hot springs; visit a Lewis & Clark Discovery Center, a Nez Perce National Historic Park, a dozen interpretive and cultural sites (including a tribal fish hatchery); listen to Nez Perce storytellers and set up teepees; day-hike and camp in the U.S.’s first Wilderness Area (the Selway-Bitterroot); tour four historic USFS ranger stations and learn about wildland fire/fire ecology, mining, and logging; and explore several original Corps of Discovery camps along the Lolo Motorway, camping and day-hiking in a new location each day.
