Be immersed in the natural and cultural history of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail/Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Students will trace the paths of Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery expedition and the Nez Perce tribe from Lewiston, Idaho to the Lolo Motorway in the Rocky/Bitterroot Mountains where the Lewis & Clark/Nez Perce National Historic Trail crosses from Montana into Idaho—the most difficult part of Lewis and Clark’s westward journey.

With a backdrop of Idaho’s wild, untamed country and the insight of Nez Perce tribal liaisons, U.S. National Park personnel, U.S. Forest Service personnel, and WSU professors, students will interactively explore the region, following the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway (also called the Lewis & Clark Highway), traveling along five different rivers (three of which are designated Wild and Scenic), day hiking the Lewis & Clark/Nez Perce National Historic Trail, visiting several Nez Perce and Lewis & Clark National Historic Park sites, camping at original Corps of Discovery camp sites, and visiting natural hot springs, a state park, three historic Forest Service stations, the U.S.’s first designated wilderness area, a logging museum, and a Lewis & Clark Discovery Center.
