Using the Partners in the Parks model of interdisciplinary teaching and learning, through multiple sessions each day, connections to landscape, art, literature and lifestyle will be made through examining the life and writing of Henry David Thoreau. Activities related to Thoreau’s life will include reading and discussing his work, sauntering through the landscape, and wood carving.

Asheville is an area is richly diverse in the arts and literature. Other authors who either visited, harkened from, or are laid to rest in the area, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Carl Sandburg and O. Henry will be object lessons in tying literature to a sense of place and community.

Additional activities will include:
A book binding project at Asheville Bookworks, hiking at Triple Falls and other NPS locales, visiting the Moog Synthesizer Factory, and exploring a Living Roof System.

PITP participants will also be expected to lead a session, either using the subjects above or through personal experience and research related to the area. Time will also be set aside for discussing the basics of planning NCHC Partners in the Parks projects, the proposal process, and NCHC committee opportunities.
