The program features one or two days of camping at Gateway NRA, where students will meet with NPS staff and participate in a service project; other nights will be spent in the dorms at LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn as they explore NYC on foot and by public transportation, visiting NPS sites and neighborhoods. Participants must be willing to walk several miles in an urban setting, use public transportation, and try new foods.

We define “gateways” broadly:  New York City is not only the gateway to America for new immigrants (Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, African Burial Ground National Monument) but is the “gateway” to the Republic as the first capital of the United States (Federal Hall), and the center of the gay rights movement (Stonewall National Monument).  The NYC-area NPS sites also celebrate “gateways” in science:  on Long Island is the home of Theodore Roosevelt (Sagamore Hill), who was instrumental in the conservation movement and whose century-old Antiquities Act is currently under attack;  in nearby Edison, NJ, Thomas Edison helped usher in the modern world (Thomas Edison National Historical Park); and all around the harbor (Gateway NRA), the NPS, Army Corps of Engineers, and others are working on ways to combat sea level rise and catastrophic storms brought on by climate change.
